CASE STUDY

Follow-on project: Aligning sesame buyers and sellers

 Client

Problem

A year after the first project - and following the success of the sesame trials across Queensland - the Department of Agriculture engaged Coriolis under their collaborative project framework.

What we did

For this project we interviewed domestic and international supply chain participants, including breeders, buyers and manufacturers of sesame products.

The project profiled firms and identified their needs in terms of volumes and specifications. The project also discussed the soft benefits of using Queensland sesame.

This process identified gaps in the current supply chain – in particular, that there was no huller in the State. The project then developed a compelling pitch document to support investment in sesame, targeting all industry participants across the supply chain.

The project culminated in a workshop of breeders, growers, buyers, manufacturers and brand owners. In this workshop, stakeholders from across the chain met, discussed the situation and challenges leading to an understanding of each others needs and – most importantly - agreed to work together going forward.

The material and insights presented in this report emerged from a larger body of work

This project used a simple, straightforward approach to identify, profile and rank key potential customers for Australian-grown seasme

Output

Three key resources were produced:

  1. An identification of high potential partners for growers and other supply chain participants

  2. A detailed explanation of customer needs

  3. A Sesame Pitch document that could be used by all stakeholders targeting new customers and new investors.

Clear next steps were identified to take the sesame industry forward. For sesame to be successful, the industry needed to work together. The industry needed a compelling story and a straight forward process to attract and align supply chain participants, including breeders, growers, processors, buyers, and users.
